parents [Jan. 16th, 2006|04:38 pm]
Certain events have led me to believe my dad might be a closet democrat:

Exhibit A: Last year he met Hillary Rodham Clinton and--wait for it, wait for it--said he liked her a lot.

Exhibit B: TODAY MY DAD HAD BREAKFAST WITH BARACK OBAMA. And Mayor Daley, Gov. Blagojavich, Jesse Jackson, Jesse Jackson Jr, and others for an Operation PUSH civil rights progressive benefit. He said Obama was "Very slick. Very tall and good looking. Very graceful, very personable."

If Martin Luther King Jr Day can bring together far right-wingers (or rather, "We're not really republicans, we just don't like democrats") AND far left-wingers, that in itself is a success.

Really intense and powerful photojournalism piece on Iraqis affected by violence:
"Face and Voice of Civilian Sacrifice in Iraq"
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/26/international/middleeast/26testimony1.html?8dpc
The article is short, and there's a link on the left to the photos. I think this might have changed my life.

my break is good [Dec. 24th, 2005|02:38 pm]
[Current Music |EARTH WIND & FIRE "SEPTEMBER"]

My sister's new ringtone:
"WHO? MIKE JONES. WHO? MIKE JONES. WHO? MIKE JONES. JONES. JONES."
But not the song, just his voice saying that. Being a baller just runs in the family. I'm pretty sure its the Albanian-Sicilian side (aka the mafia side).

Also, I propose that the money my parents will save on tuition by me studying abroad in Senegal for a semester should be used for a 2-month summer abroad in Tibet. Yes?

ah life! [Dec. 14th, 2005|09:57 pm]
Hey, wanna hear a funny story? It's called Harvard Business School inviting Kat "I want to work for a humanitarian non-governmental organization" Bawden to attend a week-long forum called Getting Global Strategy Right to help "align corporate strategy with the realities of globalization." So bascially, a lot of things I am adamantly against. Perhaps it was the Social Science with emphasis in International Studies and Global Development major that just screamed CORPORATE BUSINESSWOMAN.

But wait, there's more! Before receiving said letter and brochure (which only I somehow recieved), my day has consisted of studying for Poli Sci and "critically examining" the governments of just about every major country, watching "The Motorcycle Diaries," and reading "Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World." Just your average hating on corporate imperialism and its degradation of indigenous cultures and local economies. Ah, life is full of so many ironic hilarities! I hung the letter right above my Bulletin Board O' Inspiration. For humor and motivation.

Also, "King Kong" is A M A Z I N G. I highly suggest it. Life is radiant! I'm excited and motivated. And full of life.

What is the justice system for, if not this? If not a man who realizes his wrong-doing and wants to make the world better from it? He wrote children's books, gave motivational speeches via telephone, negotiated the accord between the Crips and the Blood gangs of L.A. He has done so much more than numerous other criminals who serve life in prison, or who are let out of jail only to commit further crimes. He's not the man he was in 1979. Schwarzenegger wouldn't even allow another trial when further evidence and arguments arose. This is very disheartening.

"To threaten me with death does not accomplish the means of the criminal justice system or satiate those who think my death or my demise will be a closure for them. Their loved ones will not rise up from the grave and love them. I wish they could. I sympathize or empathize with everyone who has lost a loved one. But I didn't do it. My death would not mollify them."

Things I love about U of M to keep my stress and dislike of academia under control during the most stressful portion of the most stressful semester ever:

In my hall there's a guy who got stabbed and a guy who got expelled from NYU for starting a knife fight. They're roommates.

My friends' physics professor's website says "Professor So-and-so, School of the Hard Knocks."

At Detroit Freedom House next week we're having a holiday dance party! We'll be gettin' down with some awesome refugees to African music and food.

Squirrels are supposed to hibernate right? Not so in Ann Arbor. Our foot-ball sized squirrels are out and about even in today's 10-degree weather. HARD CORE.

We watched "Clueless" in English 372 today. "You look confused." "Well, I thought there was peace in the Middle East..." Soooo pomo.

Friends and I spending a good portion of a saturday night learning some tight dance moves from watching music videos. We must have a dance party over winter break. Must.

i just got off the phone with The Natalie Green [Nov. 15th, 2005|12:57 am]
[Current Mood |tiiiiiiiired]

Ode to Natalie

Natalie: But don't be lame over your vacation like other vacations.
Me: What do you mean?
Natalie: That fact that you'll be home for like three weeks before telling anyone proves that you just sit in your room and talk to your fingers.

We were talking about the politics of student organizations and news papers and how Natalie wishes she could be involved in some. I told her to go to meetings for student organizations and be boisterous and start coups.
me: You'll be like the Pancho Villa of McGill student organizations.
Natalie: GIRL I DON'T NEED NO PANCHO IT AIN'T RAININ'.

A NATALIE GREEN JOKE:
"A bunch of economists are at a party, and there are wine and peanuts. Then this historian walks in and they offer him some wine. And he says sure. And that's the joke. I'm not kidding. It's actually funny if you know economics."

Another quote.
me: I talk to myself a lot, but it's mostly in my head.
Molly "JewMcGoo" Phillips: Yeah, inside my head it's just constant chatter.

Good:
--Trip to Boston, though a while ago, was wonderful.
--While in the grad library this weekend, I saw former vice presidential candidate John Edwards emerging from the bathroom and getting into an elevator with a small posse. (He had just given a speech.) I was about 6 inches away from him as I filled up my water bottle right outside the bathroom. He's petite. We made eye contact. He looked startled.
--My Halloween costume: a giant stuffed goldfish around my waist and held up with suspenders that don't fit (it's a children's costume). Pictures might have to ensue. Like this one from April. I think it works: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/pippi525/DSCF1611.jpg
--Planning South America trippp summer '06. Make it happen, self.
--The book "Delaying the Real World" which is not as idealistic as it sounds. It's all about international job opportunities and planning trips and having adventures.
--Mom gave the ok on Senegal winter '07! But not if avian flu erupts.
--I'm accepted to NYU Spring in New York program. But will I go?
--826Michigan is amazing. The people are so creative. And there's something called the Inspiration Room where they have framed pages from novels with all these edits and markup. Authors include Dave Eggers, Amy Tan, Michael Chabon, and our very own IYWS dumpster diver THISBE NISSEN.
--826Mi fundraiser this weekend, saw Julie Orringer read a new short story and being overwhelmed.
--FRIENDS.
--Learning about Far and Middle Eastern history and politics in poli sci; opening my world.
--This weekend: going to Toledo to get my friend Lara's uncle reelected as mayor. And Ludacris on Thursday. Tight.

Meh:
--SO. MUCH. WORK. Little to no time for anything else. But it's so interesting.
--The Daily. Not so hot right now.
--Planning living situation/s for next year.
--My French conversation skills have disappeared.

I want a bagel with tuna, relish, and tomatos. And sandals, shorts, and my bike. And to be in Brazil or Senegal. And take a breather from life. Even though I love it.

"Is this what you want to tell history?"

"I don't fight with the guns; I fight with my mouth."

"It was not me convincing the people. I do not believe in myself."

Happy Jew Year [Oct. 4th, 2005|07:40 pm]
[Current Mood |FULL!]
[Current Music |T. Rex]

When I asked where my neighbors were going all dressed up (how dare I forget about what day it is!) they replied "To a jewish holiday themed party."

I am currently looking to invest money in a faux-vespa, so I can be as cool as my good friend Lewis. And with Lara's wisdom, looking up NGOs and programs to possibly work at a refugee camp this summer. And trying to fill out an application for Students of the World, a month-long study abroad-esque prospect for summer. And SENEGAL 06! And I need to learn Spanish and look into Amigos for the way future. And, oh yes, my homework.

My grandpa died last weekend after dying for so many years. I'm looking forward to the funeral this weekend; I love my family so much and hope this brings everyone closer. And Boston in a week and a half, Boston in a week and a half, Boston in a week and a half.

If you have the chance, see M.I.A. in concert. Especially if Spank Rock is opening. It will be a raging, enlightening dance party. If not for her, at least for her dj. (There was a mash-up of "Bingo" with "Big Pimpin"!) But don't get lost in the D for about an hour in a small-ish car with 6 people in it. Because that's not too fun.

My nose is stuffy and i can't smell or taste anything!

aaahhh [Aug. 30th, 2005|06:43 pm]
[Current Mood | busy]

My days lately are full of summer photos, packing, Hemingway short stories, music, and goodbyefornows. Wu Tang, Balkan gypsy music, Jurassic 5, Cesaria Evora, and Bob Dylan "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack -- The Bootleg Series Vol. 7" are getting me through packing. For what is the Bob Dylan bootleg album the soundtrack, you ask? Why, a documentary by MARTIN SCORSESE about Dylan's career from 1959 - 1966. Cream away.

Also, my sister and I have been SO tight lately. We finally get each other, I think. And we sit in my bed together and whine in funny voices and read. It's nice.

Summer is offically ended. I really feel it, because I watched the last episode of "Stella" yesterday. The New Orleans flood is so awful. It's such a tragedy. The city is 10ft below sea level, so they can't drain it, the levees are underwater! We have family friends who live in NO who were out of town when this happened, so they lost everything. They couldn't prepare, they couldn't do anything, they didn't even know Katrina was headed there. They're staying at our house this weekend. I want to find some service project to go to NO and rebuild.

I valiantly make my return to Ann Arbor tomorrow. And to a bbq with my bitches and hos and our families. BITCHES AND HOS!
